4 Custom Built-In Painting Ideas for Your Space
Custom built-ins and bookcases are a natural focal point in a room. They take up a significant amount of space as well as store and display many of your items.
Why not take advantage of that fact? Updating with a simple coat of paint can make a huge impact, completely changing the look of your entire room.
Here are 4 painting options that will transform your subtle shelving to something more colorful and bold without breaking the bank.
1. Bold
Painting the back of your shelving is an easy way to create a bright, updated look to any bookcase. Be sure to leave some free space on your shelves so you can see your freshly painted colors (recommended: ⅓ of each shelf be empty). If bold colors aren’t for you, choose something a bit more subtle. Soft, warm neutrals are still effective and give you a cozy, sophisticated look.
2. Uniform
Painting bookcases to match the wall and/or trim colors creates a seamless look in your room. In this situation, contrast is very important. Select furniture pieces and accessories that will pop out from the colors of the walls and bookcase.
3. Two-toned
With a two-toned approach, you should choose two colors; one for the trim and one for the back. One option would be to select two different hues with the same value. Another option could be to select a one hue with two different shades, one darker and one lighter. Both options are an easy transition from one color to the next. Think about incorporating a color from one of your favorite furniture pieces to really tie the whole room together.
4. Striped
Incorporating floating or open shelving is one solution if you want to avoid the standard bulk of your typical bookcases. Applying color to the walls behind allows you to create visual separation within the shelving. Like the example shown below, stripes are one way to accomplish this look. Painting one row of shelving a different color than the rest will break up the shelving and create a unique feature in your room.
