Something Old, Something New, Nothing Borrowed, Some Things Blue
When the D’s moved to Chicago, they wanted their new River North condo to have clean lines and be warm enough to spend days in cozily reading and playing board games. Husband and wife, together since high school, hail from upper New York state on the water just south of Canada, so rustic elements and the color of water on sunny and cloudy days were a natural fit. These colors along with photos of water near their old home tied all those homes together making their new place as contemporary as it was an extension of their stomping ground.
One extraordinary interior design breakthrough was off-centering a new built-in to purpose the larger room into smaller, more functional and intimate areas. This was achieved by moving the built-in’s center to the left. This created a seating area for socializing and TV viewing and a dining area to the right adjacent, where a long table took full advantage of the adjacent ceiling windows.
Before
The built-in perfectly served both areas with display shelves and TV to the left and book shelves and countertop to the right, which served both as a desk and buffet surface for dining occasions.
