About the Project
The featured kitchen design project focuses on a 165-square-foot kitchen in a Chicago home that simply wasn’t working for a busy family of four. The original space felt tight, dark, and lacked efficient storage, common challenges in narrow kitchen layouts.
Our goal was to completely rethink how the space functioned while making it feel more open, brighter, and easier to use day-to-day.
How the Space Was Transformed
Led by designer Renata Malafaia, the redesign focused on smart solutions that made a big impact without expanding the footprint.
Some of the key improvements included:
- Maximizing vertical space by extending cabinetry and backsplash to the ceiling, instantly making the room feel taller and more open
- Improving layout efficiency with built-in cabinetry around the refrigerator and a pullout pantry for better storage
- Creating visual openness by removing structural barriers and introducing intentional “breathing room” in the layout
- Brightening the palette with soft, calming tones and layered textures that reflect light and add warmth
The result is a kitchen that feels dramatically more spacious, functional, and inviting, without increasing its size.
Thoughtful Details That Make the Difference
What truly sets this project apart are the details. From the handcrafted tile backsplash to the carefully selected finishes, every element was chosen to balance beauty and practicality.
The design blends clean, modern lines with subtle traditional touches—like beaded Shaker cabinetry and warm brass accents, creating a timeless look that still feels fresh.
Even small additions, like under-cabinet lighting and hidden appliance storage, help the space function better for a busy family while maintaining a clean, uncluttered feel.
