As a designer of 29+ years, I personally have seen many items that start out as “luxury” designer item, that seemingly only the elite can afford – but has become cost-efficient and very accessible to us all. Fabric Steam units are officially part of that list. So this linen-pants-wearing maniac mom loves it! Whether you’re one who needs crisp ironed clothes & bed linens or steaming out the occasional wrinkle on a dress shirt, there are plenty of options for all consumers.
Both stand-up and portable handheld steamers are for clients that are interested in the various nuances that steaming units can provide. The range of reasons for wanting a steamer can run the gamete from business professionals that are looking to cut their suits and dress attire dry-cleaning costs down, to households that appreciate sanitizing clothes, toys, and pillows, or like me, people that loathe ironing boards all together. The choices that contribute to your personal decision to select a steam unit will typically fall into the following few options.
A few details to keep in mind when selecting a steamer unit:
- Cost (The range of costs is from $40 to $4,000 for residential use units)
- Quality (Pro-style units higher wattage units have a stronger steaming ability; larger water trays/tanks allow for fewer refill needs and more productivity)
- Size (depending on your home space and storage options, bigger units may not be suitable)
- Functionality (All-in-one with more complex settings or basic steam ability)
The costs are an obvious key detail – there are so many options to fit various budgets from a handheld steamer around $49 to a built-in unit that can be upwards of $2,000+. Knowing your budget is key. Costs are typically increased with both the unit’s technology, its size, and its wattage (which does make a difference in residential vs. commercial needs.) and water capacity.
Another factor is the space you’re able to store the unit. Being able to house a larger unit that can fit into a space, closet, or laundry room is usually when our clients select when space permits. Larger units have an amazing array of options that really contribute to very impressive and professional style steaming. Cabinet/Built-in units have a range of sizes and require space (Images below for the ‘LG Styler’ is 17 ½” Wide X 72 3/4” High x 23” Deep ), and have a range of settings that include but aren’t limited to; ‘pant crease’, aroma tray (where you’re able to give clothes a scent with the steaming if preferred), remote start and remote monitoring – handy for anyone busy!
Alas, these cabinet-style units do take some planning on the user’s part. A typical cycle runs from 45-60 minutes and if you’re in a rush and want a ‘quick press’ there are some pre-planning needs.
Pro Options- LG Styler for the Serious Steamer
A client and personal favorite is the below, ‘LG Styler’ which retails for $1,199.

Rowenta Prostyle Full Size Steamer for Clothes with Screen 63 Inches 1.5 Liter Capacity 1500 Watts Ironing, Fabric & Garment Steamer, IS3440
If space and cost need to be a concern, there are non-cabinet style steamers that really are easy to utilize and can tuck away better. A traditional go-to for clothing stores is the ‘Rowenta – Pro Style’ Steamer. (Retails $129, Discounts are usually at Amazon for this unit. At the time of this article $94)
Rowenta is also a premier brand that has decades of irons and steam unit designs and has extensive knowledge of clothing ironing and steam units. The water tank is 1.5 liters, and very easy to move around on carpet, tile, or hardwood floors. And has a great hang bar for pants, shirts, and jackets – easily tuck the unit away in a small closet or storage area. My only issue with this one is the fact it’s not on wheels.
VIVO 120GC – Garment Steamer (retails $ 179), Amazon
Another unit that a close friend and client, who loves being wrinkle-free no matter what the occasion, adores and raves about, is the VIVIO 120GC Garment Steamer – 1300W Professional Steamer. Heats up incredibly fast, (within 2 minutes, which is a big deal if in a rush). Its interior brass heating components contribute to being able to conduct heat more efficiently and better steaming. (And thanks to sporty wheels, super easy to move around!) Its tank capacity allows for 2 HOURS of continued streaming steam. And we’ve definitely also used this to ‘freshen up’ all the house drapery too.
Conair Handheld Garment Steamer for Clothes, Turbo Extreme Steam 1875W, Portable Handheld Design
And last on my list is certainly not the least, the ultra-mobile handheld steamers are really having a moment! And I’m all about seeing the ‘little guys’ shine also. These units are perfect for anyone with a lack of storage space, and/or an ‘on the go’ steaming lifestyle. The Conair Handheld retails for $59 and is absolutely a personal favorite also. It’s streamlined and very easy to store. My only complaint is the water container is small and depending on what you’re steaming (if more than 2 small items) the water reservoir will need to be refilled. I’ve also noticed storing the handhelds, I’d highly recommend emptying out the water after each use– as they don’t store upright, and it
The unit does not have the ‘pro’ power as those stand-up units listed above, but I personally use this when in a time pinch and love it. Takes about 3-4 minutes to heat up and does a great amount for a tiny steamer.
Regardless of how ‘steamy’ you want to be – Stand up fabric steamers offer a multitude of benefits that make them indispensable for anyone concerned with maintaining impeccable garments and upholstery. Firstly, these steamers provide a quick and efficient solution for removing wrinkles and freshening fabrics without the need for ironing boards or cumbersome setups. Their vertical design allows for convenient access to hanging garments, drapes, and curtains, enabling users to effortlessly steam large items with minimal effort.
Additionally, stand-up fabric steamers are gentle on delicate fabrics, ensuring that even the most sensitive materials can be treated without the risk of damage or scorching. Their versatility extends beyond clothing, as they can also be used to sanitize and refresh upholstery, bedding, and even stuffed toys. With their user-friendly features, time-saving capabilities, and the ability to extend the lifespan of garments, stand-up fabric steamers have become an essential tool for fashion enthusiasts, homemakers, and professionals alike.
